Viedeň je mesto, ktoré v sebe spája dramatickosť aj eleganciu ako máloktoré iné. Po stáročia, ako srdce Rakúsko-Uhorsko, bolo toto veľkolepé mesto na Dunaji definované monumentálnymi palácmi a cisárskou pompou. No za barokovou okázalosťou sa skrýva aj iná Viedeň – kultivovaná kaviarenská kultúra, gurmánska tradícia a bohaté dedičstvo hudby, umenia a dizajnu, ktoré sa pohybuje medzi jemnosťou aj odvahou. Od Johanna Straussa po Egona Schieleho, od Gustava Mahlera po Josefa Hoffmanna – všetci zanechali v meste nezmazateľnú stopu.

Táto kniha je vizuálnym pokladom viac než 175 rokov histórie Viedne. Prostredníctvom stoviek starostlivo vybraných fotografií sleduje premeny mesta z cisárskeho centra na modernú metropolu. Je to akoby prechádzka časom aj ulicami – zachytáva vývoj urbanizmu, architektúry a kultúrnych trendov, ktoré formovali jeho podobu. Objavujeme napríklad veľkolepý koncept mestského „Gesamtkunstwerku“ z 19. storočia na Ringstraße, ale aj sociálne experimenty tzv. „Červenej Viedne“ v 20. rokoch 20. storočia, keď mesto prvýkrát riadili sociálni demokrati.

Fotografie odhaľujú nielen slávne pamiatky, ale aj menej známe zákutia a každodenný život mesta – jeho rozmachy aj dramatické dejinné zvraty. Vidíme kultúrny rozkvet prelomu storočí, keď Viedeň pôsobila ako „laboratórium moderny“ vďaka osobnostiam ako Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Adolf Loos či Sigmund Freud. Nasledujú dramatické udalosti po roku 1934, nástup nacizmu a tragédie holokaustu, ktoré zasiahli kedysi multikultúrne a pulzujúce mesto. Ďalšie kapitoly zachytávajú povojnovú Viedeň – mesto filmovej legendy The Third Man, rozpoltené medzi ruinami a špionážnymi hrami. Záver knihy patrí súčasnosti: Viedeň dnes opäť žiari ako jedno z najatraktívnejších európskych miest, kde sa bohatá história prirodzene prelína s medzinárodnou otvorenosťou a živou modernou kultúrou.

This volume is a treasure trove of photography from the last 175 years, following the evolution of Vienna from imperial capital to modern metropolis.
